More About Jason Brethorst

Clinical Interests:

Jason is happy to partner with adult clients of all walks of life to identify, work towards, and achieve their mental health goals, though he is especially well-suited to work with men and young adults. Jason is able to help clients with a wide variety of mental health concerns, but is particularly experienced working with clients on issues that involve trauma, problematic substance use, depression, anxiety, relational difficulties, and ADHD. Jason is also trained in psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy and is happy to do integration work with clients at Sagent who are interested.

Clinical Approach:

Jason is a former scientist and teacher who came to the field of mental health out of a sense of purpose rooted in helping people heal. He brings that same ethos of curiosity and dedication to others into his clinical practice as a therapist. Jason’s work is informed by a belief that human beings are complex and that our environment, physical health, and mental health are interdependent systems. That is why Jason brings a holistic approach to his work as a mental health counselor.

Jason is well-versed in a number of approaches to therapy, including those that focus on skill development and strategies to cope with mental health symptoms. While he is happy to work with clients to help them learn these important skills, Jason’s main focus as a counselor is to partner with clients in exploring and uncovering underlying psychological dynamics that, while at one time were adaptive, now may contribute to their mental health symptoms and/or problematic behaviors.

Informed by psychodynamic principles, Jason believes that safe and meaningful relationships are not only an important element of mental well-being, but they are the vehicle by which we can more fully come to know and understand ourselves. When we understand ourselves more deeply, we are empowered to grow and make conscious change to improve our lives and mental well-being. That is why Jason places a strong emphasis on the therapeutic relationship and takes a highly relational approach to therapy.

Hobbies:

Jason loves to spend quality time with his family, as well as traveling, hiking, biking, gathering with friends (especially around a bonfire), and being in nature. Jason also enjoys good food & cooking, reading, playing sports and games of all kinds (especially Magic: The Gathering), and is an avid fantasy footballer.
