More About Catherine Kuschel

Clinical Interests:

My therapy practice has included one-to-one and group counseling with adults of all ages (women and men) and adolescent girls. I have knowledge and/or experience with depression, anxiety disorders, life transitions, ADHD, trauma and trauma bonding, PTSD, eating disorders, anger, grief and loss, self-esteem, shame and guilt, codependency, self-identity, alcohol, drug, and behavioral addiction, spirituality and spiritual guidance, pastoral counseling, life meaning and purpose, career counseling, and other concerns. I have a heart for all those struggling with their mental health and well-being. I am LGBTQIA+ affirming.

Clinical Approach:

My goals for treatment are two. First of all, to offer a quiet, safe space where you can be yourself and hear yourself think, a space where you are free to explore and reflect on the disturbances in your life and secondly, to be a companion with you on this journey. My approach is person-centered, strengths based, and integrative. The techniques I use include psychoeducation, psychodynamic therapy, narrative therapy, existential therapy, desensitization, and CBT, DBT, and other coping skills. I do give homework as I believe talking only goes so far in the pursuit of mental and spiritual health and wholeness. I also believe that while we all need coping skills to “adult,” relying solely on them to feel better is only a short-term solution. At times it is necessary to dive deeper to find and untie the “knots” in our past. Taking the first step to seek therapy or returning for a refresher after a time away, can be anxiety-provoking. Know you are not alone.

Hobbies:

I enjoy spending time with my family, especially watching my granddaughters grow up. I stay in regular contact with close friends and draw spiritual energy from the sun. To further this cause, I take a break to walk the beach in Florida for a couple of weeks each winter. I also enjoy hiking and biking. I practice Pilates and Gyrotonics to stay fit and have a large seal-point Siamese tom cat who is of the opinion he is lord of the manor.
