More About Susie Smith
Clinical Interests:
I work with individuals at all ages and stages of life, helping them navigate challenges and transitions. My background includes supporting people learning to live with disabilities, especially as they adjust to changes in career and independence. I have experience with depression, anxiety, OCD, substance use, life and educational transitions, and adapting to new diagnoses or disabilities. My goal is to meet clients where they are and listen to their concerns fully to address them effectively. Through the therapeutic process, my goal with each client is to help them understand symptoms, build resilience, and feel empowered in managing their mental health so they can live a more confident, fulfilled life.
Clinical Approach:
My approach centers on creating a safe, comfortable space where clients can be their authentic selves. I believe progress begins when you feel truly seen and heard, and I strive to build a trusting relationship grounded in respect for all cultural, religious, and gender identities. Using a strengths-based approach, I help clients identify and use their abilities to address concerns. I draw on evidence-based methods such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and positive psychology, adapting each session to fit the individual’s needs. My priority is to help clients feel empowered, capable, and hopeful—while ensuring they find the provider who is the right fit, even if that isn’t me.
Hobbies:
Outside of work, I enjoy time with family and friends, cheering for the Iowa Hawkeyes, and exploring new local businesses. For self-care, I love being outdoors, staying active, running, and taking my dog Daisy on walks.
